The love for ones country and patience do pay off. Ask the 5 feet
8 inches tall Sierra Leonean beauty queen Mariatu Kargbo. She waited
for two long years before she joined her national contest. She made
sure she is well prepared and achieve nothing less than victory. Her
love for her country compelled her to join beauty pageants. She felt
bad when her country's representative to Miss World Fatmata Turay
failed to become one of the semifinalists in 2007. Being based in
China, Mariatu have to fly back to Sierra Leone just to join the
national contest. It is of course not surprising then Mariatu chose a
Chinese mask dance for the talent competition. That performance
propelled her to become one of the Miss World semifinalists.
Mariatu is full of talents. During the national contest, she wowed
the judges with her acrobatic dance. At Miss World, she also showed
traditional African dance during the Dance of the World segment.
Mariatu had this mission to put her country Sierra Leone in the
beauty pageant map. After all Sierra Leone is more associated with
its civil war as well as war diamonds than beauty pageants. Such
negative labels are what Mariatu is hope to erase. More than that
however, she is genuinely concerned about people suffering from
malaria. More people suffer from this disease than HIV/AIDS and
Mariatu vowed to use her Miss Sierra Leone title to help the sick.
There is much hope now in Sierra Leone that their Miss World
contestant will go beyond the semifinals. In the recently concluded
Top Model contest, Mariatu was awarded with Designer Dress Award. The
award may put emphasis on the design of the wardrobe that the
contestant is wearing but it also includes how the contestant
projected the beauty of the wardrobe. Having won the award is a very
very god sign for Mariatu. It means that her qualities is not merely
constrained within the talent segment of Miss World 2009.
What are the chances of Mariatu in capturing the Miss World 2009?
Well, she can breathe easy now considering that she was fast tracked
to the semifinals. She is clearly being noticed now having won two
special awards. In the field of more than 100 women being visible is
crucial to victory. Mariatu, now highly visible, has a pretty good
chance to bring home the jewel studded crown to her diamond producing
country.
