At the end of 2003, the Finnish Refugee Council started a new project in Sierra Leone, in which it cooperates with local organisations to provide non-formal adult literacy training to returnees and refugees coming from Liberia. Nine Sierra Leonean organisations that are specialised in various development activities, such as agriculture, small credit services, women’s issues and combating AIDS, are involved in the Council’s work. The teaching of literacy is specially adapted to the organisations’ own activities, so that it supports their particular development projects. Lessons in reading, writing and mathematics are thus directly useful to the refugees and returnees in their daily lives.
