Sierra Leone at a glance

Sierra Leone is ranked second from bottom in the 2004 Human Development Report, with an unenviable HDI value of 0.298. About 0.9% of the people live with HIV/AIDS.

The population is generally youthful, constituting about 52%, most of whom are illiterate, without skills and have participated actively in the eleven year civil conflict in the country in particular and elsewhere in the sub-region.

The country has however been identified as one of the 20 countries to benefit from debt cancellation in the next 12 - 18 months if the full requirements of the HIPC initiative are fulfilled.
