Surgical Centre in Goderich

immagine

In 2001 Emergency opened a Surgical Centre in Goderich, a village on the outskirts of Freetown.
An abandoned medical clinic was refurbished into a surgical block. New buildings were added to create a high quality Medical and Surgical Centre for the treatment of war victims and orthopaedic patients.

The admission's criteria were later expanded to include all surgical emergencies.

Two new wards were built in 2003, one of them specifically for paediatric cases of malaria, acute anaemia and respiratory infections.
Unique in Sierra Leone, Emergency implemented a project for the treatment of oesophageal burns caused by the ingestion of caustic soda, a common phenomenon in a country where soap is haphazardly homemade.

The international personnel provide training for local staff members, who are few and poorly qualified in Sierra Leone. The local health authorities specifically asked Emergency to provide training for anaesthesia nurses, granting its program official recognition as a Professional Training Institute.
