MP Maju Bah stated: “The importance of this conference to Sierra Leone is
indicated by the very large and high-powered delegation we have sent. It also
shows the importance of Israel to our country and this is just the beginning.”
He added: “As MP heading the legislative committee of parliament, I can say
that we will express our new mining policy statement very soon. One policy
involves reviewing existing mining licenses to ensure they conform to the normal
standards. Another policy concerns how to regulate alluvial mining and large
mining concessions. It is easier to regulate and control the latter and thus we
encourage this type of mining.”
“We are interested in beneficiation, but will first consult with Mr. Eli
Avidar. If we pursue beneficiation we will make sure all policies are in place
and there are no surprises for investors.”
He noted that the country’s annual production last year was over 500,000
carats and the prediction is for that to increase this year by 20-25% because of
an increase in modern mining.
He summarized: “Our country is peaceful, the rule of law exists. We have a
new government and we are ready to partner with genuine and well-meaning
investors.”
