Farmers in the eastern Kenema district of Sierra Leone have been earmarked to
receive assistance from the African Development Bank (ADB) through the
‘Agricultural Settlement Rehabilitation Project (ASREP)’, APA learnt here
Monday.
The Secretary General of the National Farmers Association of Sierra Leone,
Ahmed Siaka Koroma, said the project would run for a five-year period while the
first phase will begin January and end in December 2008.
Koroma says the project will give support to the rehabilitation of tree crops
plantations, low land farms, production of seeds and revival of poultry and fish
farming in the district.
He said Kenema was selected as one of the districts to benefit from the
project because of its high agricultural potentials, vulnerability and incidents
of poverty.
Among other things, the arrangement will target small scale farming
enterprises and farming households as the key beneficiaries and also aims at
reducing youth unemployment and strengthens peace and security in the country.
