Many people hold the view that the Bumbuna light will be switched on towards
the end of this year and those who reside or frequently visit Bumbuna and are
witnesses to the speed with which the work is being tackled, know fully well
that the Bumbuna electric project will be switched on earlier than anybody
expected.
Amadu informed the New Citizen that if the Bumbuna light doesn’t
come on soon, it is not because the hydro-electric dam is not complete; it could
be because of the constant theft of the transmission cables that should convey
light from the project site to some parts of Sierra Leone He revealed, “if only
government can concentrate its energy on the prevention of the frequent thefts
of the transmission cables, there is no need for the Bumbuna light not to be
switched on somewhere around the middle of this year.”
Asked how he
suspected that the project was nearing completion, Amadu responded, “I did not
suspect, I know because I am always at the site, observing every progress being
made. That is why I firmly believe the project is nearing completion.”
Amadu
also opined that more work has been done on the dam in the past six months than
what was done in the past six years when nobody seemed to care about the
progress of the project.
He maintained, “casual workers have been moved to
other areas, an indication that only the technical components now remains for
which I am convinced that the project is nearing completion.”
It could be
recalled that President Ernest Bai Koroma, upon taking over the reins of
government, made the generation of electricity one of his main priorities that
resulted to the commissioning of two generating machines on December 20, 2007 to
serve the Western Area.
Recently, stakeholders and other donor partners
provided the sum of US$30 million for the completion of the Bumbuna hydro
electric project.
Though we have our doubts about Amadu Samura’s prediction
of a mid-year turn on of the lights of the Bumbuna hydro electric dam, we are
nevertheless hopeful because a closer look at the project seems to suggest that
the end is not too far away.
With the Bumbuna hydro electric dam in full
operation, there is no doubt that Sierra Leone will make a turn around rapidly
with the development of cottage industries that will provide employment
opportunities for youths.
We look forward to the day when as predicted by
Amadu Samura, the Bumbuna lights will come on much earlier than expected.
