The Libyan Fund for Assistance and Development i n Africa has donated items
worth millions of dollars to the people of Sierra Leo n e through President
Ernest Bai Koroma.
According to a press statement, the gifts were presented
to the Sierra Leonean Government Thursday.
The consignment, which included
five tractors, 400 bags of rice, 200 bags of flo ur and medicines, were
presented by the representative of the Libyan Embassy in S ierra Leone, Rajeb
El-harathi.
Presenting the gifts, the envoy said the donation,
notwithstanding the quantity, is an expression of the concern of the Libyan
government and people of Libya towards t he needs of the people of Sierra
Leone.
Mr. El-harathi said such gestures have been rendered to people of
other countr ies in Africa, to address the needs of the deprived, especially
orphans, the age d and the disadvantaged.
He drew attention of the diverse
contributions the Libyan government and people are making towards the promotion
of south/south cooperation, and said the Libyan leader; Muammar Kadhafi is
committed to improving the standards of living of the world's poorest
peoples.
Receiving the gifts, Koroma expressed appreciation to the Libyan
leader and peop le, whose humanity moved them to seek the welfare of the less
privileged of the w orld and appealed to the generous to address the very
pressing needs of the nati o n.
He described the donation of, especially the
tractors and medicines, as timely a nd called on the delegation to revisit
Sierra Leone to know the more urgent need s that required
attention.
President Koroma expressed appreciation and gratitude to the
leader in particula r and the government and people of Libya in their efforts to
promote a unified a n d self-reliant Africa.
It is recalled that gifts,
especially rice and other food items, from Libya to f ormer President Ahmad
Tejan Kabbah, resulted in rancor in Sierra Leone, when the gifts were kept in
secret.
