Vietnam calls for support for Sierra Leone reconstruction

Vietnamese Ambassador Le Luong Minh called upon the United Nations, regional organisations and the international community to continue to assist the Government of Sierra Leone to overcome difficulties, promote socio-economic reconstruction and strengthen the international integration process.

Vietnam to help Sierra Leone grow more rice

Vietnamese agriculture experts and farmers from the southern Mekong Delta will travel to Sierra Leone this year to help the war-battered country increase rice production, state media reported Monday.

They will visit from March and assist in setting up an irrigation system for 112 hectares (277 acres) of land and chose one of 57 rice varieties for the pilot project at Mange Bureh, Port Loko district, said the Vietnam News Agency.

"Due to war and other reasons, the living standards of local residents are very low and their main foods are potato and cassava," To Van Truong, head of the Southern Water Conservation Institute, was quoted as saying.

"Sierra Leone and Vietnam have many similarities with regard to their people and climate. Therefore, we will transfer our farm model to them."

Vietnam became a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council this year and is the chair of the council's Sierra Leone Committee for 2008.

Vietnam to chair Security Council Committee on Sierra Leone

Viet Nam will undertake the chair of the United Nations Security Council Committee on Sierra Leone in 2008, a Vietnamese representative to the UN Security Council said.

In addition, Viet Nam is also assigned the deputy chair of the Security Council Committees on Lebanon , the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Counter Terrorism Committee, Ambassador Le Luong Minh told the Viet Nam News Agency after he attended the council’s meeting on January 3.

Ambassador Minh said the January 3 session focused on discussing the council’s working agenda in January.

He said the council is slated to hear a report presented by the Committee 1718 Chair on the implementation of the resolution on the nuclear issue of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and will hold consultancy or discussions on the operation of the UN Peacekeeping forces in the Republic of Chad, the Central African Republic, Sudan, Cote d’lvoire, Kosovo, Nepal, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Georgia, and the Middle East.

The council members unanimously agreed that though the Myanmar issue is not on the Council’s January agenda, the council is willing to hold a meeting, if necessary, to hear Ibrahim Gambari, the UN General Secretary Special Envoy on Myanmar issue, to brief on his activities.
